How the hours are counted

Each row is one shift. Its hours are the end time minus the start time, minus any unpaid breaks. If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift ended the next day. A second shift on the same day gets its own row (“+ shift”).

Totals follow your pay period: weekly, every two weeks, twice a month or monthly. Overtime is worked out week by week, even in a two-week period, because the federal rule counts each workweek on its own.

Worked example: Unpaid 30-minute lunch

Questions

How do I calculate hours worked?

For each shift, take the end time minus the start time, then subtract any unpaid breaks. Add the shifts up for the week. The calculator does this for every row and shows the total in decimal hours (8.50) and in hours and minutes (8:30).

What if my shift goes past midnight?

Type the end time as it was, for example 22:00 to 06:00. An end time at or before the start means the shift ended the next day, so that shift counts as 8 hours. For daily overtime, the hours before midnight count on the first day and the rest on the second.

Do paid breaks count as hours worked?

Paid breaks count as worked time and unpaid breaks don’t. Mark each break as paid or unpaid. You can type a break as minutes (30 min) or as a start and end time (12:00 to 12:30).

How is overtime worked out?

By default, hours over 40 in a week are overtime at 1.5 times your rate. That’s the federal weekly rule. Under Pay rules you can turn on a daily limit, change the limits and multiplier, and add double time. Daily overtime is counted first, so no hour is counted twice.

Is the pay figure my take-home pay?

No. It’s an estimate of gross pay, before tax and deductions. Use it to check the hours and overtime on your paycheck.

Does my timesheet get sent anywhere?

No. What you type stays in this browser, so you can come back to it. Clear removes it. Nothing is uploaded.
