Decimal hours are what pay stubs, payroll forms and most timesheet apps use, because a decimal can be multiplied by a rate. Minutes can’t: 7:45 times $20 isn’t a sum you can do directly, but 7.75 × $20 = $155 is.

The decimals are rounded to 2 places, half up, the same way as the calculator further down this page and the Pocket Timesheet app. If you need a whole card in decimals rather than one number, fill in the time card below and its totals show both forms.

Worked example: Rate 15.33 for 7:46

$15.33/h · overtime over 40 h a week at 1.5×

DayStartEndBreaks
Mon, Nov 209:0016:46none

7.77 hours (7:46): regular 7.77, overtime 0.00. Estimated gross $119.06: regular $119.06 + overtime $0.00.

How the conversion works

Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 45 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 7:45 is 7.75. 20 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.333…, which rounds to 0.33, so 6:20 is 6.33.

To go back, multiply the decimal part by 60. 0.4 × 60 = 24, so 8.4 hours is 8 hours 24 minutes. 0.22 × 60 = 13.2, so 0.22 of an hour is about 13 minutes.

One trap: don’t multiply your rate by a decimal that’s already been rounded. In the worked example, 7 hours 46 minutes at $15.33 is $119.06 from the exact time. Round to 7.77 first and you get $119.11. The calculator always multiplies by the exact minutes and rounds the money once.

Questions

Does .5 mean 30 minutes?

Yes. 0.5 of an hour is 30 minutes, so 8.5 hours is 8 hours 30 minutes. Likewise .25 is 15 minutes and .75 is 45 minutes.

What is 0.22 of an hour in minutes?

About 13 minutes: 0.22 × 60 = 13.2. Going the other way, 13 minutes is 0.22 hours (13 ÷ 60 = 0.2167, rounded to 2 places).

What is .07 of an hour?

About 4 minutes: 0.07 × 60 = 4.2. Four minutes converts back to 0.07 hours.

Why does my pay stub show 7.77 hours instead of 7:46?

It’s the same time in decimals: 46 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.7667, rounded to 0.77. Payroll uses decimals so the hours can be multiplied by your rate.

Can I convert a whole week at once?

Yes. Use the time card below this converter: type each day’s start and end, and the total shows in decimal hours and in hours and minutes.
