Overtime hours calculator
Type your shifts for the week and this calculator splits every hour into regular, overtime and double time. The pay rules are already open: overtime after 40 hours a week, and also after 8 hours in a day. Turn the daily rule off if your job only counts by the week.

Daily and weekly overtime overlap, and that’s where hand counts go wrong. A week of five 9-hour days has 1 hour over 8 each day, 5 in all, and 45 hours for the week, 5 over 40. Those are the same 5 hours, so it’s 5 hours of overtime, not 10. The calculator counts the daily hours first and only adds weekly overtime for regular hours past the weekly limit.
Double time is a third tier. Set “Double time (2×) after” to 12 and every hour past 12 in a day is paid at twice the rate. Add an hourly rate to see the overtime and double-time pay next to the hours, as an estimate of gross pay before tax.
Worked example: Five 9-hour days: 5 overtime hours, not 10

57.00 hours (57:00): regular 40.00, overtime 16.00, double time 1.00. Estimated gross $1320.00: regular $800.00 + overtime $480.00 + double time $40.00.
A long week with daily, weekly and double time
The second worked example is 10-hour days Monday to Thursday, a 13-hour Friday and 4 hours on Saturday: 57 hours. Each 10-hour day has 2 daily overtime hours, 8 in all. Friday has 4 overtime hours (from 8 to 12) and 1 double-time hour (past 12).
That leaves 44 regular hours, which is 4 more than the weekly limit, so those 4 become overtime too. The week ends at 40 regular, 16 overtime and 1 double time. At $20 an hour: $800 + $480 + $40 = $1,320 estimated gross.
Questions
How do you calculate overtime hours?
For a weekly limit, total the hours in the workweek and subtract the limit: 46 hours with a 40-hour limit is 6 overtime hours. With a daily limit too, count the hours over the daily limit each day first, then check the remaining regular hours against the weekly limit.
Is overtime 1.5 or 2 times my rate?
The calculator uses 1.5× for overtime and 2× for double time. Some jobs pay a different overtime rate; change the multiplier under Pay rules to match your pay stub or contract.
How do I calculate double time pay?
Multiply your hourly rate by 2, then by the double-time hours. At $30 an hour, double time is $60 an hour, so 2 double-time hours pay $120. The calculator does this when you set a rate and a double-time limit.
Does a night shift count toward one day or two for daily overtime?
Two. Hours are split at midnight, so a 22:00 to 08:00 shift puts 2 hours on the first day and 8 on the next. Each part is checked against that day’s limit.
Can I turn off the daily rule?
Yes. Untick “Daily overtime” under Pay rules. Then only the weekly limit applies, and the double-time setting switches off with it.
